Director Dr. M.A. Haniffa

Dr. M. A. Haniffa is the Director of Centre for Aquaculture Research & Extension, St. Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai, Tamilnadu. He was graduated in Zoology in 1970 and was awarded M.Sc in Zoology in 1972 from Madras University. He started his research career under the supervision    of Eminent Fish Geneticist Prof Dr. T .J. Pandian and obtained PhD degree from Madurai Kamaraj University in 1976. In 1980 he joined St.Xavier’s College, as Post Graduate Professor and worked in the Department of Zoology till May 2008. Since 1996 he has been working as Director of Centre for Aquaculture Research and Extension. Since May 2008, He is working on seed production of threatened murrels as CSIR Emeritus Scientist. Dr. Haniffa is well known in the National and International circles in Aquaculture field for his numerous contributions to air breathing fishes especially murrels and catfishes. His specialization is on murrels and he is one of the few authorities the World over in respect of this unique group of fishes. He has authored more than   142   research publications in reputed journals including SCI.


              At present he is working as  Principal Investigator in the NAIP Sub Project on “A Value chain on murrel production in Tamilnadu and Orissa (Rs.302 lakhs) funded by ICAR. Dr. Haniffa has been conducting regular Fish Farmers Training programmes and Workshops at CARE. With his multidisciplinary training  and interdisciplinary skills he has contributed considerably in the fields of fish breeding, fish nutrition, fish culture, fish diseases, fish genetics, fish biodiversity and fish conservation. more..
